Recently, Microsoft has published .NET Framework version 4.5, in order to test the compatibility of my software products, I have installed one also.

But it is very strange, after installed it, I cannot find the related version folder under X:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework, always only v1.0.x, v1.1.x, v2.0.x, v3.0, v3.5, v4.0.x, just no v4.5 or v4.5.x folder.

Does Microsoft put .NET 4.5 to another directory? I think this is unlikely, because the compatibility are very good from version 1.0 to version 4.0, and Microsoft will not give up the compatibility achievement in version 4.5.

After read the official page and verified it manually, I found .NET 4.5 is an in-place installation based v4.0, it does not create a version folder alone, that is, .NET 4.5 is just installed into v4.0.x directory.

At last, let us to compare the file version between v4.0 and v4.5, the result is very clear:

For instance: X:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\system.dll
v4.5: file version: 4.0.30319.17929, last modified: 2012/07/09, size: 3,366 KB.
v4.0: file version: 4.0.30319.1, last modified: 2010/03/18, size: 3,401 KB.
